Conservative-reconstructive dentistry

Conservative dentistry is the branch of dentistry that deals with restoring the integrity of dental elements that have lost part of their structure. It is aimed at the prevention, diagnosis, treatment plan, and rehabilitation of pathologies involving the hard tissues of the tooth (enamel, dentin, cement), such as caries, mechanical abrasions (wrong brushing), chemical erosions of acids) and, within certain limits, dental wear (parafunction, bruxism, clenching, grinding).

The treatment is carried out through the removal of decayed or damaged tissues and the reconstruction of the cavities using filling materials (compositeresins, glass ionomer cement).

Dental caries is a destructive process of the hard tissues of the tooth (enamel and dentin) caused by multiple factors: microorganisms, a diet rich in carbohydrates fermentable by bacteria, and individual predisposition.

Necessary if not mandatory is the use of a rubber dam for all restorative procedures. This phase serves to ensure the isolation of the tooth from the other anatomical structures of the oral cavity, to avoid damage to the latter, or contamination of the operating field by
saliva, oral fluids, and the patient’s breath during the operative procedures.
